• France 24 | AU votes against cooperating with ICC arrest warrant for Bashir | AFP: from the page: "The African Union has decided not to cooperate with a war crimes warrant against Sudan President Omar al-Beshir and again appealed to the United Nations to delay the case, delegates said Friday. Two delegates from different countries said the African Union summit had agreed to a text reading: "The AU member states shall not cooperate... for the arrest and surrender of Sudan President Omar al-Beshir.&quo t; The summit was expected later Friday to formally announce its decision, which effectively allows Beshir to travel across Africa without fear of arrest under the warrant for war crimes and crimes against humanity issued by the International Criminal Court. The text was backed by Libyan leader and current AU chief Moamer Kadhafi, who has said the ICC represents a "new world terrorism,&quo t; and won support from many countries who felt the court was unfairly targeting Africans." ;

• The ICC continues to fight for relevance | FP Passport: One must begin by asking why African leaders shouldn?t celebrate this focus on African victims. Do these leaders really want to side with the alleged perpetrators of mass atrocities rather than their victims? Is the court?s failure to date to answer the calls of victims outside of Africa really a reason to leave the calls of African victims unheeded? Moreover, in three of these cases, it was the government itself that called for ICC intervention ? the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and Uganda. The fourth case, that of Darfur, was selected not by the international court but forwarded by the U.N. Security Council. The I.C.C. represents hope for victims of atrocities and sends a message that no one is above the law. That hope and message will be undermined if the African Union condemns the court because it has charged an African head of state.
